Planning Ahead for Spring: A Time to Embrace Nature and Connection

Ah, spring is just around the corner! While autumn will always be my top favorite season, spring holds a close second spot in my heart. There's something about the air warming up and the earth waking up from its winter slumber that fills me with excitement. Sure, I’d probably feel differently about summer if I were up in New England, enjoying the mild temps and cool breezes. But for now, I’m here in Texas, where the summer heat can feel like a constant battle with the sun. That said, spring in Texas is a dream, and it’s time to start thinking about preparing for its arrival.

One of the many reasons spring is special to me is that it's the season of my husband's birthday, a time for celebration. Then there's St. Patrick’s Day, which is one of my favorite holidays—who doesn’t love a bit of Irish luck and a little green in the air? And of course, it’s when Texas truly shows off its natural beauty. The bluebonnets and wildflowers bloom across the state, turning the countryside into a stunning sea of color. Spring brings mild, tolerable warmth, and the sunsets in Texas are absolutely breathtaking. If you're considering visiting me at the ranch, spring is the perfect time to do it. I’d never wish the brutal summer heat on anyone, but spring? It’s a different story. Come enjoy the sunshine, the wildflowers, and the fresh air!

As I start thinking about springtime, I also begin planning how I want to decorate and reflect the season in my home. For me, spring decorating is less about plastic, mass-produced decorations and more about bringing nature inside. There’s something incredibly special about surrounding yourself with elements that are organic and true to the season. Whether you’re decorating for spring or getting ready for spring holidays, I encourage you to bring nature’s beauty into your space.

This could be a fun project for you and your kids! Have you heard of “nature tables”? They are quite popular in homeschooling communities, where children gather natural items like flowers, stones, feathers, and leaves to create beautiful displays. I think it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the changing seasons and to encourage a deeper connection to the earth. And for those interested in the softer sides of magical living—like green witchery, cottage witchery, or kitchen witchery—this approach is perfect. It aligns beautifully with the natural rhythms of the world and keeps us grounded during the holiday seasons. Let's make our homes more intentional and connected to nature.

Something the kids and I have been enjoying lately is Cucumber-Lemon Infused Water. Just slice up some fresh cucumber and lemon, add a few sprigs of mint, and let it infuse in cold water for a couple of hours. It’s light, refreshing, and free from the sugary stuff. Anything to help them drink actual water! (Looking at you, son.)

And if you’re looking for a simple, light snack to pair with your drink, how ‘bout my daughter’s favorite: avocado toast? Use whole-grain bread, spread a ripe avocado, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and maybe add a little drizzle of olive oil or a sprinkle of chili flakes (she uses Tajin on hers) for some extra flavor. It’s a perfect spring snack to enjoy on the porch when the days warm up.

As much as the news and current events can be overwhelming at times, it’s important that we don’t let the weight of it all swallow us up. There’s still so much beauty in the world to be grateful for, and it’s essential that we hold onto that. We must continue to focus on what’s good, what’s beautiful, and what brings us together as a community. As we enter into this new season, let’s make it a point to strengthen our sense of sisterhood and unity.

Spring is a reminder that, no matter how tough things may feel at times, the world continues to bloom and renew itself. Let’s do the same for ourselves.
